What are servo motors?

A servo motor is a precision electric motor used in systems that require exact control of position, speed, or torque. Unlike standard electric motors, a servo motor always knows its exact position thanks to feedback — an encoder or resolver.

Servo systems consist of a servo motor, a servo amplifier (drive), and feedback sensors. Together, they enable extremely precise and fast motion control in industrial and automated systems.

Servo motors are manufactured as AC or DC motors, brushed or brushless, and are characterized by a high level of efficiency and compact design.

How does it work?

1. The controller sends a signal for the desired position or speed to the servo amplifier.

2. The servo amplifier powers the motor with current and controls its operation.

3. The encoder or resolver on the motor continuously measures the actual position and sends the signal back.

4. The system compares the desired and actual position and automatically corrects any error — in real time.
